Do you think it’s possible to be touched by a typeface? To have strong feelings for a font? After you read our thoughts on their role in design, we think you’ll say I do!
First, let’s clarify the terms. You may hear typeface and font used interchangeably. But, in fact, they are not the same. The difference between a font and a typeface is like that between songs and an album. The former makes up the latter. Remember that and you’re good to go.
For example: a typeface would be Helvetica, and a font would be distinction within the typeface, such as 12 point Helvetica Bold.
In the next few posts we’ll define various styles of typefaces to think about when choosing the perfect font for your design. Stay tuned!
There is a quiet buzz of energy from the creative hive that is the office of TCG Design in East Petersburg. Established 25 years ago this design and marketing firm produces powerful and memorable campaigns that have garnered over 150 industry awards over the years. In 2017 Kim Smith, the Creative Director for TCG Design reached out to SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon for a mentor and was paired with seasoned volunteer mentor Kevin Saint Cyr.
“I heard about SCORE from a friend a couple of years ago and decided to reach out to them to help me with my business. We have been in business for over 25 years but, several years ago, we had a change in leadership which left me wearing some hats that were out of my areas of expertise. Working with my mentor has helped us to develop our mission, vision and values, create an elevator speech, identify our strengths and weaknesses, and is helping us learn the art of developing new business.”

Over the course of the last two years Kevin worked closely with Kim and her team and got to learn about her business and her goals for the future of TCG Design.

We focused on development of a strategic plan which resulted in a new business development strategy. The team also developed target market strategies for commercial and government markets.”

Kim continues to meet regularly with her mentor and has an agenda for her work with him with a focus towards the future.
“My vision is to grow our business in the areas in which we excel and, in addition, develop the skills to adapt to evolving changes in our industry. My immediate goals are to add new clients and increase our revenue over the next year.”

Kim’s time with her mentor has produced real results for her company and strengthened her confidence in her role as its leader. She believes that this has been an invaluable experience for her as a small business owner. When asked what advice she might have to convey to other small business owners, entrepreneurs, or start-ups, her response was:
“My advice is to reach out to SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon whether you are a brand-new business or established, even for many years. They are a treasure chest of resources and knowledge. We’ve been working with SCORE for two years and we have so much more that we can learn to be the best that we can be. Our mentor Kevin has made me see that all things are possible and I’m not all alone in this.”

We are used to turning on a dime with deadlines and responding immediately to client requests. It’s standard operating procedure around here. So when Power Packs Project approached us to create a new website and needed it completed for an event that was quickly approaching, we jumped right in with the help of our new digital hire, Bill Trovato.
Power Packs Project is a great organization that empowers families with education and ingredients to create nutritious weekend meals, so their children return to school fed and ready to learn. One of the most crucial needs for sexual assault victims is to be heard. For many, that’s when the healing begins. We are proud to have worked with the Lancaster YWCA on this campaign to raise awareness of their sexual assault counseling services. They offer compassionate, confidential, cost-free counseling throughout Lancaster County.
If you live in Lancaster you will be seeing this campaign on buses, convenience store posters and on facebook throughout the year.

Since 2014, we’ve worked with the PA Department of Health’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control on a variety of projects. From this hard-working group of folks comes guidance and action plans that positively impact the lives of Pennsylvanians. Under their direction, The Pennsylvania Cancer Coalition brings together medical specialists, health data experts, patient advocates, cancer survivors and cancer organization representatives to plan and carry out activities that target the state’s most prevalent screenable cancers, the geographic areas hardest hit by these cancers, and the most vulnerable citizens.
